I have always said that to see how good a singer is when they don't have technology to iron out any off key singing, or if you can't sing at all (I'm talking about 60-70% of singers from all genres nowadays.) Marvin Gaye's classic "I Want You" show Gaye doing what he does best: romancing the listner with his soulful voice, making it an instrument that was probably responsible for a lot of children being conceived during his lifetime (and probably still true today!!)
This expanded edition show alternative cuts, and helps show Gaye's thoughts as he was preparing this album together with the help of Producer Leon Ware's fine direction. A very fine album that is timeless, erotic, and very intense in what Gaye is conveying to the listener.

This album is wonderful, Marvin is a master... he always creates something different, inovating the music. The arrangement is magnificent, rich in details. Marvin creates a magical and loving atmosphere and elevates the music to other higher ground. I Want you, the main track, has here many wonderful versions, each one reveals new details and sounds that many times are imperceptible. All tracks are full of romantic and sensual mood. A Great album of a Great Genius. Well done Marvin!

Many people know Marvin Gaye for his top ten hits (What's going, Sexual healing, etc...) But there are lot of people who have not heard his other work (what a shame). I remember the first time I heard Marvin Gaye was in college. My roommate and I were both from Chicago attending college in the "dirty south" He told me that Sunday's would be resevred for playing only Jazz and other types of music (no hip hop for 24 hours ,damn!!). So when he put in the Marvin Gaye, I Want You tape, I was like "damn, who is that". I was amazed by his vocals and the sound of the music he was singing over, I never heard anything like this in my life.
I have just about every Marvin Gaye album and this is one of my favorites. Me being from Chicago and seeing pimpin first hand, I was just taken by the his singing of the line " I want you, the right baby, like I want you, but I want you to want me to. Classic, just classic. Both discs offer a different sound to each song that you will enjoy. After I listen to this cd, I realize why I don't like today's RB These fools can't singing (ok, maybe R.Kelly and John Lengend is good). When a new artist signs a record deal, a contract requirement should be for then to listen to any Marvin Gaye cd before recording. Marvin is the only artist (I've heard)that can sing his own background vocals and do it like its another person singing ( after I read that he had problems with the industry and paying other people and he still wasn't getting paid. He went for self). His voice is amazing and this is what make me appreciate his music even more.
If your thinking about buying this album, stop thinking about it and do it. This is a must have.
Other Marvin Gaye albums to get are Hear My Dear,In Our Lifetime and The Trouble Man Soundtrack.
